Respectable teachers, dear classmates,
Good afternoon!
My name is Wang Shijie. The title of my report for Stanford postdoctoral research is Research on Faculty Development in Application-Oriented Universities.
Since 1982, I have worked in the Academic Affairs Office of Anhui University, which is a double first-class university in China. In the 1990s, I gave lectures on computer popularization education on more than 20 TV stations across the country, including China Central Television and China Education Television. In 1994, Shijie Education was founded, which was named after me. Anhui Shijie Computer College is the first university I founded. On February 24, 2009, the People's Government of Anhui Province officially approved the establishment of Hefei Information Technology University. It was filed by the Ministry of Education on April 2, 2009. This is the second university I founded. It is a full-time ordinary university with the qualification of independently issuing academic qualifications and diplomas. At present, I am the president of the two schools and also the academic member of the Sino-German Vocational Education Alliance (Tongji University), and the vice chairman of the Higher Education Management Branch of China Association of Higher Education (Tsinghua University). For more than 40 years, I have been engaged in the practice and research of higher education management. This report is based on my managerial practice and my academic research during the post-doctoral period.
Until today, it has been 1276 days since I received the admission notice from Stanford on November 12, 2019. During this period, I listened to over 100 online and offline academic reports, including the reports by John Hawkins, the father of the world's creative industries and a famous British expert on creative and cultural industries; Dan Schwartz, Dean of the School of Education at Stanford University; David Sandalow, former deputy secretary of the US Department of Energy, founding scholar of the Center for Global Energy Policy, School of International and Public Affairs of Columbia University, and member of the Steering Committee of Beijing Professor, Global Center of Columbia University; Jeffrey Ward, Dean of Homerton College, Cambridge University, etc.
I have published more than 10 academic papers, including the paper "On The Construction of Teaching Team in Chinese Application-Oriented Universities" in an American journal Journal of Education and Training Studies, the paper "The Current Situation of Teacher Education in Chinese Application-Oriented Universities and Improvement Strategies" and the paper "China’s Experience in the Development of Applied Universities" in a British journal Journal of Research in Vocational Education (JRVE). I have four academic monographs published by Press of University of Science and Technology of China, namely Research and Construction of the Teaching Mode of Higher Vocational Colleges Based on Creativity (Chinese and English versions), Research on Management System and Mechanism of Application-oriented Universities and Research on Talent Training Mode of Application-oriented Universities.
In China, there are three basic types of universities: academic universities, application-oriented universities, and vocational and technical universities. Application-oriented universities are different from the other two types but they also share some common characteristics with the other two. They not only emphasize practical application but also do not completely abandon academic training. In 2014, the Chinese central government proposed to guide a number of ordinary undergraduate universities to transform into universities of applied technology. After that, more than 600 local undergraduate universities in China began to transform into application-oriented universities. With the transformation of school orientation, the faculty development of application-oriented universities has changed from the pursuit of academic talents with high academic qualifications to "dual-qualified" teachers with both theoretical teaching and practical teaching abilities. This transformation has brought great challenges to the development of China's higher education.
Based on that, I began to pay attention to faculty development in application-oriented universities. My research mainly adopts the methods of literature research, text analysis and field investigation to study the problems and improvement strategies in the faculty development of Chinese application-oriented undergraduate universities, such as: the basic concepts, quality structure and ability standards of the faculty development in application-oriented universities; the current situation and development dilemma, training system, evaluation and incentive mechanism, the development path of "dual-qualified" teachers and part-time teachers, etc. There are not only the research based on ideas but also the summary and refinement based on China's successful practice and exploration. Now, I have completed the report Research on Faculty Development in Application-Oriented Universities. Generally speaking, this research shows a silhouette and tells a story of the development of China's higher education, and it is also a milestone, an ideal and a pursuit of my personal career development.
12 years ago, in 2011, I visited Stanford and had the privilege of listening to wonderful speeches by professors such as George Foster and Peter C. Reiss.
I admire many professors at Stanford. Frederick Terman, former vice president of Stanford who is known as "the father of Silicon Valley", is one of my idols. In history, Stanford accepted Terman's idea and founded Stanford Industrial Park, which helped the innovative research of cutting-edge talents to turn into industrialized products that can be produced quantitatively and gave birth to Silicon Valley.
It has been my lifelong pursuit to learn from Stanford and emulate Stanford. Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech "I Have a Dream" at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963.
I also have a dream. I want to found a century-old famous university like Stanford.
As an old Chinese saying goes, it takes ten years to grow trees, but a hundred years to educate people. 15 years ago, I acquired some land in Hefei University Town, Anhui Province, China to build the university town campus. Recently, I acquired some new land to build a new campus in Lu'an, Anhui Province, China. Lu'an, Anhui, China is also called West Anhui. My centennial dream is to build the "Stanford" of West Anhui, strengthen the synergistic development of the university with industries inside and outside the park, incubate the "Silicon Valley" of West Anhui, and become the "engine" of economic and social development in West Anhui.
Without the encouragement and support of my teachers and classmates, the completion of my research report would not have been possible! Here, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all my teachers, classmates, friends, and family who care about my studies!
During my postdoctoral research at Stanford, I had the honor to attend the lectures of more than 20 professors, including Professor Daniel Schwartz, dean at Stanford Graduate School of Education. In particular, I had the privilege of listening to the presentations of Professors Martha Olney, Bill Shelander and Bill Reichert. Their high-level lectures have broadened my knowledge and benefited me a lot. Here, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the teachers who have taught me and guided me!
In the meantime, my thanks should also go to the learning platform provided by the program team, which has given me this precious opportunity to continue my dream in such a famous university as Stanford. I would also like to thank my classmates for their help and care. It is their companionship that gives me precious friendship while I acquire knowledge.
I also want to thank my wife Jin Ling, my daughter Wang Xi and my son Wang Qing. They gave me the greatest love in the world. Meanwhile, I would also like to thank all my colleagues at Hefei Information Technology University, whose support, encouragement and trust have allowed me to focus on my study and research.
In closing, I would like to extend my sincere thanks and deep blessings to all those who have given me guidance and encouragement! I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the leaders and experts at home and abroad who set up this learning and improvement platform for us! It is your support and help that gave us this precious learning opportunity.
Dear teachers and classmates, Stanford is my alma mater, and China is my motherland.
I deeply love my mother and people. I deeply love my school and teachers and students. I am happy because you are happy, and I am successful because you are successful.
Thank you all!
马丁·路德·金于1963年8月28日在林肯纪念堂发表演讲“I have a dream”。
特别是此次研修班,我有幸聆听了Martha Olney(玛莎·奥尔尼)教授、Bill Shelander(比尔·谢兰德)教授和Bill Reichert(比尔·雷谢尔)教授的报告。
